Introduction to Backbends

Backbends look cool (or painful!) but why do we do them?

There is a misconception that backbends require a lot of flexibility but the power behind these poses is patience and strength. Join Janelle for this 90-minute workshop where you will learn how to backbend safely, focusing on spine and shoulder mobility, while strengthening the entire muscular posterior chain. We will learn the purpose behind the poses and how to transition into them safely.

Workshops are a great opportunity to ask questions and explore poses that general classes don’t have time to dive into.

For students with a lot of mobility, we will work on building strength, so you don’t overload the spine. Those who want to learn how to deepen their backbends safely, this workshop gives us the time to move into poses that work for your body.

This workshop is designed for individuals who feel confident in their practice and are comfortable with spine and shoulder mobility. Hands-on adjustments and assistance will be available with consent.

Janelle will close the workshop with a restorative practice using bolster and blankets, allowing your mind and body to unwind.

By committing to a regular handstand practice, you’ll learn the art of patience, gain confidence, strength, and flexibility in your practice, and add playfulness to your time on the mat.

If you are curious about hand balancing, then we will build on these skills in a future workshop to garner the strength and awareness to approach different types of handstands. There will be individualized tips and drills and you will learn how to incorporate or transition your handstand into a vinyasa flow.

Rocket 1 Masterclass with Blaze

$25+GST | FREE FOR YOGALIFE MONTHLY MEMBERS

Rocket yoga was developed by Larry Schultz from Ashtanga yoga. The Rocket 1 sequence is a mixed-levels sequence derived from the postures of the primary Ashtanga yoga series and is meant to help practitioners build a strong foundation that develops their practice. The Rocket 1 sequence includes twists, folds, hip opening, body strengthening, and the opportunity for some inversions, that will allow the practitioner to build their endurance and stamina.

Benefits:

This class sequence is meant to help the practitioner build strength and stamina for furthering their practice. It will provide the practitioner an opportunity to learn how to use their breath, gaze, and inner strength to balance out their sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems. This balance of the nervous systems allows the practitioner to access a state of tranquil alertness — or as some call it, their “flow state”.

What to expect:

This 90-minute masterclass is a flow-based class that will encourage the student to link their body movements to a 5-count breath while increasing heat in the body. Class will begin with sun salutations for warm-up before moving into the standing postures, followed by the seated series, core series, and the traditional closing sequence. Following the physical practice students will be led through pranayama (breathing exercises) and meditation. Expect to find new challenges, get sweaty, and have fun!
